Writing Tip: 3 Ways to Maintain Consistency in Tone

Many writers face the challenge of maintaining a consistent tone throughout their poems, narratives, or short stories.  Here are three tips from Writer’s Digest that will help ensure that the tone of your work is balanced.

  1. Find a section of your work that you are happy with then revisit this section as a guide for the rest of your work.
  2. Read pieces of writing that possess the tone that you are after, whether it’s from your previous writings or the writing of another author.
  3. At the completion of the writing try moving the most impactful sentences or lines near the beginning of you work for a strong opening, or towards the end for a strong conclusion to experiment with the overall tone.
