After 9 months of poetry slams, writing workshops, in-season tournaments and more than 70 performances by over 20 poets, four poets emerged from UrbSlam’s Final Stage as representatives for St. Louis at National competition.
The 2015 UrbSlam St. Louis team consists of two veterans, Salena Burch (formerly Poeticslang), now in her third year on the team, and Freeman Word, his second year with the group. Newcomers Sahara Sista SOLS, a playwright and poet, and Myki Thomas, a VerbQuake alumna hailing from the two-time champion Gateway STEM High School team, made the team.
UrbSlam’s summer tour of regional and national competitions include Southern Fried Poetry Festival in Little Rock, Arkansas, Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam in Rockford, Illinois, and National Poetry Slam in Oakland, California.
Throughout the summer, UrbSlam will host events at Legacy Books and Café and UrbArts to raise money and awareness. UrbSlam will compete against several nearby slam teams on July 11th at the 4th Annual Spoken Word Expo in Old North St. Louis.
Performance for the 2015 team are underway but their first competition is still six weeks and six hours away in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The next UrbSlam season begins with a three-day qualifying tournament, August 27th-29th at UrbArts for Individual World Poetry Slam. The first night of the regular season is Friday, September 4th at 9:00.
