Grace Ruo

2021 STL Youth Poet Laureate



Grace Ruo is the 2021 Saint Louis Youth Poet Laureate. Her work has been featured in the Brave New Voices anthology and in the the 2020 National Book Festival presented by the Library of Congress. Grace was a member of the 2020 St. Louis Youth Poetry Slam team that won the Brave New Voices International Youth poetry championship. 

 Born in Kiambu, Kenya in the Nairobi Metropolitan region, Grace & her family immigrated to the United States when she was six years old.  She recently graduated from Hazelwood West High School. This fall, she will attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison as a First Wave Scholarship recipient.  Her poetry weaves family stories into narrative poems of her experiences in America, often in relation to ethnicity, gender, race, & justice.
