Dr. Michael Castro, Inaugural Saint Louis Poet Laureate Passes at 73

We lost a great.

According to a published report, Dr. Michael Castro lost his fight with cancer and transitioned yesterday morning (Dec 23). We send our condolences to the family of Dr. Castro and to all touched by his generosity, love, and poetry.
As the first poet laureate of Saint Louis, he brought UrbArts to Unity Community and his mission to bridge the divides that plague our city. We are all the better for it. Dr. Castro has been a friend to UrbArts and we’ll honor his legacy by continuing Brick City Poetry Festival and crossing the divide.

We are heartbroken over his passing. We’ll update soon on planned events celebrating his life and work.
